Understanding cutting tree roots starts with understanding that not all roots do the same job. A tree’s root system has two distinct categories, and the consequences of severing them are very different.
Feeder roots are the small, absorptive roots that spread through the upper soil layers and pull in water and nutrients. They are typically less than an inch in diameter, grow in large numbers throughout the root zone, and can be cut in moderation without serious harm to a healthy tree. The tree compensates by growing new absorptive roots in adjacent areas.
Structural roots are a different matter. These large, woody roots radiate outward from the base of the trunk and provide the stability that keeps the tree upright during wind events, heavy rain, and saturated soil. Severing a structural root does not just affect the tree’s health; it affects its ability to remain standing. A tree that loses a major structural root on one side is significantly more vulnerable to failure in that direction, and that risk does not always announce itself immediately.
